When Kids Answer Back: Parenting Today Through Young Eyes
A joint discussion paper from ARACY and the Parenting Research Centre, bringing together Australia’s largest parent survey with young people’s own words about what they see in their families. Parents worry most about their kids’ anxiety. Kids worry most about their parents’ mental health. Neither group is telling the other.
Two studies. Two very different age groups. One shared pattern.
“I worry a little bit about my parents’ mental wellbeing and their relationship with work and how they’re making ends meet […] it also makes me worried about like if they get sick and they need me to take care of them.” Abbey
The Parenting Today survey asked more than 10,000 parents and carers across Australia what worries them about their children. The Young and Wise Roundtables asked young people aged 13 to 25 what worries them about their parents. Read side by side, the answers tell a story neither survey could tell alone.
Parents’ biggest concern is their child’s worries, fears and anxieties, rated a moderate or large problem by 67% of respondents. Young people want their parents and caregivers to focus on their children’s mental and physical health (ranked 1st across most groups) and not on their use of rapidly changing technology (social media /AI) (ranked last by all groups)
Both groups are carrying worry for the other. Neither is saying so.
